Botanical description
Enormous variability in the primary and secondary colours and patterning of seed coats.

Production description

Notable for the wide range of seed colours and its composition, tarwi is more like soyabeans than the other lupins because of its protein and oil contents. It is a very marginal crop at present, except in the Andes where it is grown for human nutrition. Bitterless varieties have been known for a short time and these should stimulate its production. It requires further domestication to grow and produce in European climatic conditions.
