Non-food uses
Fri 09 March 2007
Legumes have some key advantages for new needs & opportunities such as:

1. Legume and techno-functional bio-products
> Provide seed ingredients with good technico-functionnal properties suitable for non-food applications: bio-degradable plastics or other biodegradable products, plant or seed extracts for chemistry industry, etc.

2. Legume for bioenergy and biorefinery
> Produce biomass with low N-supply in order to improve energy efficiency
> Component of crop systems for regional biorefinery (biogaz, refined extracts)

3. Legumes and CO2 market:
> The emission of greenhouse gasses will be taxed very soon in the EU (2008-2012)
> The agricultural sector may propose projects reducing the greenhouse gasses emission and create “carbon credits” on the market in the coming months and years
> The introduction of legumes in the rotation decreases the emission of greenhouse gasses of the rotation.
