Grain legumes: what is at stake for the EU?
Strengthening the grain legume sector which is still recent in the EU is both (i) urgent to maintain and increase sufficient volume and expertise, and also (ii) strategically necessary if the EU decides to exploit local supplies with the current high prices for agricultural raw materials and energy, and to benefit from the capacity of these legume crops to use renewable nitrogen and therefore target a more sustainable agriculture with lower fossil energy consumption and lower GHG emissions.

Reflecting the needs of grain legume breeders, the workshop "Targeting Science to Real Needs" (Paris, 23-25 April 2007) focussed on the exploitation of genetic resources, and on the concrete use and integration of molecular technologies in breeding. The main themes addressed in this first workshop were genetic diversity, disease resistance, abiotic stress tolerance and seed quality.

Grain legumes do not usually need nitrogen fertilisation for their growth. Cultivated in rotations with other crops such cereals, they decrease the chemical inputs of the following crop, and they contribute to a reduction in fossil energy consumption and in the release in greenhouse gases.
In May 2006, more scientific and technical analyses on the environmental benefits of including legumes in crop rotations have been released publicly in Brussels at a GL-Pro/GLIP Dissemination Event.

Zurich workshop - 2004
Organised by Agroscope FAL Reckenholz and AEP, this international scientific workshop entitled 'Grain legumes and the environment: how to assess benefits and impacts?' was held in Zurich (Switzerland) on 18–19 November 2004 with 50 participants.
It brought together experts working on the methodologies for environmental assessment of agricultural production systems including grain legumes as crops or as raw materials for feeding animals, in order to:
1. Gather and exchange expert knowledge on the environmental benefits and negative impacts specific to grain legumes production and use in Europe
2. Define the knowledge gaps and the need for future research relative to this area of scientific research;
3. Establish an inter-disciplinary expert network of scientists working on environmental aspects of grain legumes production and use.
