Welcome address
Fri 04 May 2007
On behalf of GLIP consortium and of the Conference Committees, we are delighted to invite you to the GLIP Dissemination event ‘Integrating legumes biology for sustainable agriculture’, held as the 6th European Conference on Grain Legumes in Lisbon in Portugal, under the patronage of Mr José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission.

The theme of the conference highlights the desire of bringing together experts from a variety of fields to promote knowledge and research in Grain Legumes.

In addition to keynote presentations, given by invited speakers, individuals are invited to submit abstracts for presentation as talks, or as posters. There will also be ample time for discussion at various workshops.

Lisbon is a surprising destination. An amalgam of 800 years of cultural influences that mingle with modern trends created a city of intricate and spectacular contrasts. Lisbon offers a wide variety of options to the visitor, including beaches, countryside, mountains and areas of historical interest only a few kilometres away from the city centre.
The Conference will take place at the Lisbon Congress Centre, a welcoming complex, located down by the Tagus River, in a historical neighbourhood, just a few minutes away from the city centre.

The Organising Committee is determined that this conference will be both scientifically rewarding and socially enjoyable. In addition to the Gala Conference Dinner, to be held at the magnificent glass pavilion of Tapada da Ajuda, on the top of one of the seven hills of Lisbon, in the proximity of the royal palace with the same name and in the area that was once the hunting grounds of the royalties, participants will have opportunity to taste the famous Portuguese wines at the cocktail to be held after sessions on the first day of the conference, and to listen to Portuguese choral music in a concert taking place at the end of the second day of the conference.

We are certain that you will find the meeting both enriching and enjoyable, and look forward to seeing you in Lisbon next November.

The EU GRAIN LEGUMES Integrated Project (GLIP, February 2004 to February 2008) is a large consortium aiming to integrate research relevant to grain legume species, combining activities in disciplines from genomics to economics. This project wishes to combine with other national or international programmes on legumes to provide a timely assessment of the progress in and prospects for legume research.

This conference will bring together those interested in legumes and especially legumes in agriculture. This will provide conference participants with the opportunity to assess the outputs of several coordinated research activities and to discuss prospects for their use and to prepare future collaborations.

Legumes have a unique role in agriculture because they can fix atmospheric dinitrogen by biological symbiosis and therefore minimise the input of fossil energy. They are sources of primary products, currently mainly raw materials for feed uses, and also of numerous ecosystems services. Knowledge of these leguminous plants has advanced significantly in recent years, boosted by the emerging legume genetic knowledge and technologies.
